Port Debian scsitools (scsi-spin) to allow spin-down of (idle) USB HDDs

Description (Last modified by tg)

The goal is to be able to manage USB disks, which are handled like SCSI disks in Linux, using the Debian scsitools package. Especially the spin down of idle disks is of interest here. One would be able to save power and to go easy on seldom-used external drives. Why the scsitools package? This thread shows that it does the job for OpenWRT (Kamikaze)-based devices. Of course, for the requirements discussed here, it would be sufficient to port the scsi-spin utility.

scsi-spin has been added to the trunk repository in svn version 1832.

The bug (whishlist) report will be closed when Jan or someone else have reported scsi-spin is really working for usb disks and scsi-spin is in the 1.0 branch. Until then I will keep the report open for responses of any kind.

If someone wants to test scsi-spin, then here is the ipkg:

You don't need to try the current version of this package, it does not work.
