I can reproduce this on a WL-500gP with a USB-to-serial converter, I think it is an uplcom(4), which works fine on a WL-500g with 1.0 (most recent, built from source).

The devices are simply not recognised by the kernel USB driver, because otherwise, lsusb would have listed them.
